Beauty of the Month: Shay Lorentzen, Portland Trailblazers Professional Cheerleader & Esthetician

Happy Monday you guys!  I neglected my little blog over the holiday but I’m back now!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I certainly did.  I have some delicious (and skinny–duh!)  recipes to share with you this week that I whipped up over the long weekend, but today’s post is more exciting!  Shay Lorentzen is a professional cheerleader for the Portland Trailblazers, a licensed esthetician and one of my dearest friends!  Shay is the perfect November Beauty for my blog because she’s a total product junkie like me, she’s super fit, she’s a skincare expert and she’s absolutely beautiful!  Check out my interview with this cutie below to learn about her beauty essentials, fitness routine and skincare tips.

Hi everyone! I’m so excited and flattered that Arantha chose to feature me because I’m such a fan of her blog and always look forward to reading it, not to mention she’s one of my best friends! Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading about what I’m up to 😉 so, a little about me… I’m a 28-year-old licensed esthetician and professional cheerleader for the Trailblazers, living in beautiful Portland, Oregon. I work full-time at a high-end makeup/skincare store called Blush Beauty Bar. It’s an adorable, locally-owned shop that’s fun, funky, and fast paced. We carry a lot of great brands like NARS, Lorac and Stila, as well as skincare lines like Arcona, Dermalogica, Peter Thomas Roth and many more. We provide makeup service as well as full body waxing, threading and skin treatments. We specialize in eyebrow shaping and perfecting, but we do a bit of everything.

When I’m not on the floor at Blush, I’m on the court at the beautiful Rose Garden. This year will be my 3rd season cheering on the stunt team for the Trailblazers. We cheer at every home game and do local appearances around the city for various organizations. I’m thrilled and amazed that I’m almost 30 and I’m still able to pursue my love for cheering and basketball.  Though these 2 jobs keep me busy, in my spare time I’m constantly exploring Portland’s interesting culture, amazing food and absolutely stunning atmosphere.

What are your 5 beauty product essentials you can’t live without?

Tokyo Milk Tainted Love Hand Cream

As an esthetician I’m constantly washing my hands and I ALWAYS have hand cream on me. I have many faves but Tokyo Milk Tainted Love is my all time favorite for its dark vanilla, white tea, orchid and sandalwood scent. It’s super hydrating and makes my hands feel silky (but not greasy).

Clarisonic Mia

I adore this product! I was apprehensive about it at first, but it has truly changed my skin. The Clarisonic allows products to penetrate deeper and do their job properly.  I can really feel and see the difference.

Boscia BB Cream

I LOVE BB (beauty balm) creams because they are such an easy, on-the-go way to improve overall skin tone without looking too “made-up.”  They also act as a moisturizer, primer, and SPF. This cream helps to reduce appearance of pore size and wrinkles! Who doesn’t love an all around beneficial product?!

Lipgloss/lipstick

 

I constantly need something on my lips because they are always dry, plus I love the look of having a little something on the lip. I have more than I’d like to admit, but I swear I use them all!

Brow gel and powder

I have absolutely unruly brows if untamed, so I like to put a bit of clear gel on them to keep the shape in place. Even though I have rather thick brows I still like to fill them in with a little powder to give an even look. The brows really shape the face and I’ve always preferred a full brow so by filling them in it creates a strong yet natural look.

Who is your beauty icon?
I would have to say my mom is my beauty icon. Not only is she one of the sweetest, most kind-hearted people I know, she’s beautiful inside and out. I can only hope that I can be like her one day. She’s such a strong woman and always sees the positive in any situation. I can count on her to uplift me with her genuine words of wisdom and unconditional love…(a little corny, I know, but so true!)

The natural look: underrated or overrated?
Underrated! I have a new-found love for this look.  Since I work at a beauty store and have to wear “stage” makeup for Blazers, on my days off I can’t wait to walk out the door with nothing but a little tinted moisturizer and mascara.

Favorite perfume?
I have so many favorite perfumes but I would have to say that my signature scent is Jivago.  Since it’s a bit pricey I only use it on special occasions. For everyday I’m loving Tokyo Milk perfume in Tainted Love…plus it’s only $36!

Go-to lipcolor?
That’s a hard one! Have you seen my lippy bag? 😉 I’m going to have to say NARS lip gloss in Greek Holiday. It has a natural tint to it with a little bit of shimmer, the perfect everyday lip gloss.

Favorite skincare product?
I am totally in love with the entire line of IMAGE Skincare. This brand allows you to mix and match different lines to cater to all skin types. I love the Vitamin A C and E serum. It’s packed with antioxidants and vitamins to give skin a healthy, bright glow (smells like oranges too). I truly swear by this entire line, it’s hard to pick just one product.

As an esthetician, what are your top 3 skincare tips?

 1.  Keep it simple.

Sometimes less is more. As long as you are cleansing, exfoliating and using a serum/moisturizer you should see improvements and stabilization in your skin.

2.Get regular skin treatments from your esthetician.

Though you can buy professional product, your skincare specialist has all the bells and whistles in the treatment room to really improve your skin.  I like to recommend a 60 minute treatment for your first time and then doing 30 minute express treatments after that for maintenance (if cost is an issue).  This way, your esthetician can really get to know your skin and help you achieve you skincare goals. Sometimes we think of skincare treatments as luxuries, but we go to the gym to keep our bodies in shape, go to doctors or chiropractor to keep our bodies healthy, etc…so seeing a skincare specialist is no different in keeping our skin healthy!

3. Drink lots of water!

One simple, cheap way to keep skin plump, hydrated and healthy is taking care of your body. Eat healthy and stay hydrated…the skin is the largest organ in the body so drink up!

Quick beauty tip?
I like to throw on a bright or bold lipstick when I’m in a crunch or don’t want to put a lot of makeup on. It’s simple but still makes a statement and I always feel confident.

What are three beauty items you always carry in your purse?
Hand cream by Tokyo Milk, my lip gloss bag and tweezers 😉 (never know when you’ll need them)

Favorite cheap beauty product?
Cetaphil cleanser.  This gentle, foaming face wash is great to alternate between my more active cleansers, or when I’ve done a peel or heavy exfoliation…it’s great for all skin types and you can use it as a gentle body wash as well.

Favorite expensive beauty product?
Clarasonic brush.  As I mentioned before, a little on the pricey side but worth every penny.

Now let’s talk about that amazing figure of yours!  As a professional cheerleader, staying in shape is clearly top priority to you. What does an average week of exercise look like?
I loooove working out and switching it up! I work out about 4-6 times a week (depending on how many games I have).  Portland is an amazing place to work out because the scenery is so beautiful so I did a lot of boot camp classes this summer at various parks and wineries and ran next to the beautiful waterfront (approx 6-8 miles a day). During the rainy season I usually do indoor boot camp classes, strength training classes, and bar method classes (my fave!). I also meet with a trainer once a week for 30 minutes to stay on track. I completely believe in personal training because even though I’ve worked out most of my life, it’s always nice to have someone else share their expertise with you and it helps with accountability.

I recently bought the Brazilian Butt Lift and Turbo Fire by Beach Body to do in my apartment (I’m a marketer’s dream!). Sometimes it’s hard for me to get motivated to go to the gym when it’s cold and rainy, or when I’m just short on time. I try to do at least 30-45 minutes of working out a day, even if I can’t make it to the gym…no excuses!

Favorite healthy snack?

 I love to snack on Trader Joe’s greek yogurt spinach and kale dip. If it were up to me I would eat chips and dip all day but come on now! With this low cal, delicious yogurt I get the creaminess of a dip and by dipping it with carrots I get the crunchiness of a chip!

favorite food indulgence?
I have a major sweet tooth so I like to snack on Trader Joe’s Triple Ginger Snap Cookies and Gone Bananas (sliced bananas dipped in dark chocolate).  Yuuuum yum!

What does an average day of meals look like for you?
My meals during the week are pretty strict so I can indulge a little on the weekends. Breakfast is usually 1 organic egg and 2 egg whites scrambled with veggies and usually a little cheese.  To add in some carbs and sweetness to my breakfast I’ll toast half an English muffin and spread a very thin layer of peanut butter and low-sugar jelly. For lunch I’ll pick up a salad from Trader Joe’s on the way to work (they have a great selection of salads with protein and nutrition). For an afternoon snack I typically munch on single packages of mixed nuts from Trader Joe’s, this way it’s already portioned for me and I don’t overdo it.  For dinner I’ll have some mixed veggies, organic brown rice and some sort of fish or chicken. I’ll do different variations of these meals so I don’t get bored but still stay on track.

Quick slim down tip?

During game days I try to stay away from carbs, salt and sugar. I don’t completely eliminate all of those items, just cut back. I try not to do anything to the extreme because I just crave it more so I make smart choices and stay conscious of my intake. I have an app called myfitnesspal and it counts calories and tracks food. This handy app not only helps me stay on track but helps me plan my meals according to what I need more of (ex: carbs, fats, fiber).  I find that by tracking food I make smarter decisions and don’t go overboard.

What do you love most about living in Portland?

The scenery in Portland is absolutely breathtaking. The greenery is so beautiful and the city is awesome. I love the vibe and the people here too, some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

What do you miss most about living in New Mexico?
Sun and sunsets! I miss the weather in New Mexico so much, and the amazing food, of course, but hands down I miss my amazing and supportive family and friends the most. My heart will always belong to NM! I’ve met some great people since moving but a lot of my childhood, high school, and college friends are in Albuquerque and those friendships are irreplaceable, not to mention my wonderful and incredibly loving parents, who I miss each and every day.

    Arantha, I LOVE your blog. Thanks for pushing me past my clarisonic hesitations (yup, I bought one after your post), introducing me to great products and recipes (I’ve eaten spaghetti squash twice this week… and it’s Monday) and giving updates on amazing women like Shay and Devon!!

    • Wow, this made my day. Thanks so much for taking the time to share that!!!! I didn’t even know you read my blog! I just ate spaghetti squash twice in the last two days too. I’m now loving it with marinara and some grated Parmesan. Oh, and I just discovered that sautéing the squash in a bit of olive oil after its cooked and seasoning it before adding sauce adds a great texture and flavor!!!! Hope you are doing great!
