Tell us about your beautiful self!
I’m 21 years old and born and raised in Los Angeles. I’m currently a senior at the University of Southern California majoring in Public Relations and Marketing. In addition to editorial and styling positions in the fashion industry, I also write my blog, Angel Food Style. It covers fashion and beauty trends as well as my personal style. I’m working on some exciting new brand collaborations this summer and experimenting with some new video content!
What are your 5 beauty products you cannot live without?
Say Yes to Cucumbers” Face Wipes: I use these every day and haven’t found anything better. I take off all my makeup (foundation, blush, bronzer) with a wipe before washing my face and it helps keep my skin clean. I keep the travel-sized pack in my bag while traveling.
Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment – It’s expensive for a ChapStick replacement, but worth it. My lips get dry quickly, especially in the winter, and this just works better than any other lip balm.
MoroccanOil – I use a quarter-sized amount on the ends of my hair before blow-drying to help minimize damage and split ends. The bottle lasts forever and it smells great too.
Armani Maestro Liquid liner – Nothing makes a sharper, blacker, and more long-lasting line than this pen. I love the long felt tip. I go through one a month.
Cetaphil Cleanser – A staple and the gentlest cleanser out there.
Who is your beauty icon?
I love the Brigitte Bardot eye look – I’m always wearing winged liner and a light lip. Modern-day, I think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley always looks fresh and natural without wearing too much makeup. She looks great in bronze tones, which I love for summer.
The natural look: overrated or underrated?
Underrated! Especially in Los Angeles, makeup is all about effortless, summery beauty. A full face of makeup has a time and place (namely, nighttime events, fashion photography, etc.) but for everyday wear, I like to just use some liner and mascara on my eyes and bronzer on my cheeks.
I love Prada Candy. It’s very sweet, but still light and not overbearing. It smells delicious right away but even more so as the day goes on and it settles onto your skin. Plus, the bottle is adorable on my dresser.
Lipstick or lipgloss?
Your must-have skincare product?
Elta sunscreen. It’s light and disappears into your skin without leaving behind any residue. I use it every morning without fail.
Go-to nail polish shade?
Essie in (ironically titled) Angel Food! It’s a great pale pink that doesn’t show many chips and looks right during any season.
3 things you always carry in your purse?
Boscia oil-blotting papers, Fresh Sugar lip balm, and a handful of hair ties, which I always seem to be losing.
What’s your favorite cheap beauty product?
I’ve tried many expensive makeup removers but I always go back to Neutrogena’s oil-free formula. It’s about $6 and such great quality – gentle on the eyes, unscented, and takes every last bit of makeup off in seconds. I also love that you can find it at any drugstore, which is convenient while traveling.
Favorite expensive beauty item?
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is worth every penny to me. It has an airbrushed effect on the skin and is the perfect consistency with enough coverage to last all day while still sheer enough to see your skin underneath. It blends well, stays put and is buildable depending on how much you need that day. It’s $60 but the bottle lasts a while.
How would you describe your style?
Feminine, colorful, but still sophisticated. It definitely has a Californian influence from growing up on the west coast – I never feel like I own enough black when I travel to New York City!
Any tips for what to spend on and what to save on when it comes to fashion?
It’s not the most original advice, but it’s true: if you splurge on a great handbag and nice shoes, the rest of your outfit can be Forever21 and hardly anyone could notice. Plus, the high-low mix is so trendy these days, it’s more interesting to wear an outfit of varied price points. I always recommend saving for a well-made bag in a seasonless color that will last you years with good care. The same goes for an expensive pair of shoes; you’ll feel great every time you wear them despite if your dress is $20 or $200. This summer, I’m constantly switching up lightweight printed sundresses from Topshop, Forever21 and Zara, and paired with a great pair of wedges and staple bag, the outfit is elevated tenfold. Focus on the bag and shoes first, save on the rest of your look. From there, I’d say the next great splurges are a well-fitted pair of jeans and statement jewelry piece.
Where can you be found shopping?
My two favorite boutiques are Planet Blue and Intermix – between those two, I find most of what I love. I also shop often at Zara, which has some amazing pieces recently. Of course browsing through Neimans and Barneys is always fun. LA has some great boutiques – Principessa on Abbott Kinney in Venice is a favorite. Online, I shop at Shopbop, Revolve Clothing, and Net-a-Porter. I always check The Outnet to see their new items for a great designer piece on sale, but you have to buy fast since everything sells out in a heartbeat.
Your HAIR! Amazing. Tell us everything!
Thank you! I use MoroccanOil shampoo and conditioner, as well as the Treatment Oil on my ends before blow-drying. I’m lucky to have naturally thick hair that grows long and I only trim the ends every few months. I keep my cut pretty basic, just a few layers around my face. The length is pretty even all around. The best tip I have for long hair is to let it half air dry before you touch the dryer – it cuts drying time in half and minimizes damage. Also, stop drying your hair in your bathroom after a shower – the humidity in the room adds an extra 20 minutes to the process.
How do you stay in shape?
I love Pilates and spinning classes. I take both a few times a week, but usually relax on the weekends, or do something outdoors instead like a hike before brunch on Sunday.
Favorite healthy snack?
Where do I start? I’m obsessed with Kind Bars; my favorite flavor is “Chocolate Cherry Cashew.” I often snack on coconut milk yogurt with a handful of gluten-free granola mixed in. I also love almond butter on everything… toast, crackers, oatmeal, you name it. I can make a mean blueberry-acai-banana-cinnamon smoothie (obviously there is almond butter in that too!)
Breakfast is my favorite meal hands-down, so there’s nothing I love more than weekend brunch. During the week I usually make a quick smoothie in the morning, so when Saturday or Sunday rolls around, I look forward to a proper breakfast of eggs, pancakes and a latte.
Go-to healthy recipe?
I make brown rice pasta with plenty of green vegetables mixed in. If you use a good marinara sauce, you won’t be able to tell that the pasta isn’t made of wheat – rice pasta is a lot easier to digest, especially if you have a sensitive stomach like me. From there you can toss in chicken or salmon.
Quick skinny tip?
It’s much better to stay active year-round than to pump it up just because summer is around the corner! I feel energized and healthier when I exercise regularly so I make it a part of my week just the same as working, sleeping or eating. I also think the little decisions we make everyday add up to a big difference when it comes to staying active. I’m 21 years old – if there’s a choice between stairs or an elevator, the extra three minutes of cardio isn’t going to kill me!
