A Birthday Splurge: Chanel Coco Rouge Lipstick in Magnolia

I’ve been admiring this lipstick for months, ever since I saw this stunning ad in a magazine earlier this year: It was a part of the Holiday 2010 collection and then I believe they must have rereleased it.  I tried … Continue reading

Happy Things

Happy Friday! Sorry I haven’t been updating as frequently as I normally do! I’m still getting caught up from being on vacation in Florida. Here are a few things that have perked up my week in pictures:

Products: MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle, MAC Powder Blush in Dame, NARS Illuminator in Copacabana, Stila Stay All Day 10-1 HD Beauty Balm (Laura Mercier is still my favorite but I left it at home for this trip), CoverGirl LashBlast mascara (this is my second favorite mascara. L’Oreal Voluminous is my fave.)

How to find your perfect lipstick shade in 2 easy steps

I’m a lipstick girl and own more than I’d like to admit. From nudes to hot pinks, I wear whatever I’m in the mood for that day. A swipe of lipstick instantly makes me feel polished and pretty.

While trendy shades are fun and a great to express yourself or glam up an outfit it’s really important to have one shade that’s appropriate for all occasions and seasons. Whether you’re a lipstick lover like me or terrified of lipstick like I used to be, I think every woman should have one lip color that you feel natural and pretty wearing.

Here are makeup artist Bobbi Brown’s tips for finding your most flattering lip color:

1. Pick it in neutral

The most versatile and flattering color you can own is one that’s just a shade or two brighter than your natural lip color. It should even out your lips and look polished yet natural. It should be noticeable but not so much that people immediately notice your lip color before anything else.

Bobbi Brown says that the ideal color will vary for each person based on skin tone. For someone with my skin tone, a nudish peachy pink seems to be my most flattering color. Others may look best in a peachy brown or rose shade. For dark skin tones, an eggplant shade may be the way to go.

Bobbi also clarifies that a neutral lipstick should never be the color of concealer. Shades that are lighter than your natural color will wash you out and not be flattering at all. The perfect neutral should warm your face up.

2. Try it right

Bobbi Brown suggests using the middle of your lower lip as a color guide to determine if the lipstick is the right shade based on the above criteria. Try it on in natural daylight for the most accurate color. Also, if you’ve tried several shades your lips may become stained and not give an accurate color representation.

I read these tips in Allure recently and instantly starting playing around with my colors to see about finding my perfect shade. While I love most of the lipsticks I own and wear them often, none seemed to fit the bill just right for the above criteria. I tried mixing two of my favorite go-to neutral lipsticks, MAC Creme Cup and CoverGirl Delish. Creme Cup is a girly pale pink and Delish is a natural-looking peachy nude with a hint of pink.

20120806-120620.jpg{Creme Cup & Delish mixed together}

It ended up making a gorgeous shade that’s a neutral peachy pink and it’s just a bit brighter than my natural lip color. My perfect shade! Here’s a picture of the color combo I came up with on my lips. I think it brightens and warms my face while looking natural and feminine.

I would definitely suggest playing around with shades you already have to see if you can come up with the right mix. I’m now on the hunt for one tube of lipstick that gives me a similar effect to my own concoction (I could always melt them together into one DIY lipstick like one of my favorite bloggers does here but I like both shades on their own too much).  If you plan on trying to find your perfect shade at the mall, ask the rep for help and explain what you are looking for. She will be able to do the hard work for you and give you several options to try. I would suggest picking a lipstick at a place like Sephora, MAC or a cosmetics counter. This way you can play around with colors before comitting to a purchase and an expert can help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Even though these lipstick brands will be pricier, it’s worth the investment since this is a color you will be able to wear year-round and for any occassion. Plus, it will probably save you money in the long run to fork over $15-$30 for one perfect lipstick instead of praying you bought the right one from the drugstore and having to keep buying different shades until you find the right one.

“The ideal lip color is like the perfect pair of jeans: You can dress it up or down, and it will always look great.”- Bobbi Brown

I’d love to know what your perfect lipstick shade is!

Guest Post! Bridal Beauty Routine by Devon Thompson of Broadway Beauty Blog

I’m really excited for today’s post!  My best friend Devon got married to her college sweetheart on May 5, 2012 and I had the pleasure of being her maid of honor.  It was a wonderful wedding and Devon was truly the most breathtaking bride.  She is a professional esthetician and makeup artist and owns her own spa, Broadway Skin & Body Retreat.  She also writes the skincare and beauty blog, Broadway Beauty Blog.

Devon did her own makeup for the wedding and did an amazing job.  As an expert in skincare and beauty, I asked her to guest post today and share the makeup she used to look so stunning as well as some skincare tips and products for brides-to-be.  Enjoy!

When Arantha asked me to be a guest blogger for Gourmet Beauty I was honored.  Arantha and I have been best friends for many years and we always shared a passion and obsession with skincare and cosmetics products.  Naturally, I elected Arantha to be my Maid of Honor when I became engaged last spring. I unofficially referred to her as the President of my wedding and I relied on her not only for her MOH duties but her ideas, opinions, and advice for my bridal make-up palette.

I did my own makeup for the wedding and Arantha asked me to share the products I chose and some skincare tips for brides-to-be, so here you go!

{Best friends!}

My wedding colors were very light and springy (lots of white, blush pink, lavender, and champagne) so we decided that shimmery nudes and mauves would be a romantic color palette for my make-up.  See my wedding day make-up products below:

Lorac Unzipped eye shadow set

100% Pure blush in Peach

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eyeliner Pencil

Make-Up Forever High Definition Foundation

MAC lipstick in Creme Cup (Arantha and I both wore this on the wedding day)

-I had eyelash extensions provided by WM Lash Lounge

-Hair styled by Rosalie Wood of Waves Salon (She is amazing and did hair for a few of my bridesmaids as well, including Arantha)

Every girl wants to look her best on her wedding day but before the lashes and lipstick go on, you need to prep your canvas.  Implementing a healthy and consistent skincare routine is the most important aspect of achieving a flawless appearance on your wedding day.  I have extremely oily, sensitive, and reactive skin so it was important for me to focus on balancing my skin before the big day.  Check out my lifesaving skincare products below:

Image Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser: I am so in love with this cleanser.  It is a foaming gel based facial cleanser that removes make-up and impurities without leaving a residue or over drying my skin.  It is ideal for all skin types particularly sensitive and oily.

100% Pure Carrot Facial Scrub: Since I have very oily skin, I like to exfoliate everyday.  Some exfoliants are too harsh to use that often, but that’s why I love the Nourishing Carrot Facial Scrub from 100% Pure.  It is gentle enough to use daily without causing irritation and my skin always feels silky smooth after I use it.

100% Pure Organic Rose Hydrosol Facial Tonique: This natural aromatic mist instantly hydrates and soothes the skin.  I love spritzing my face with this after a deep cleanse.

Image Clear Cell Acne Masque: This is the best facial masque for oily/acneic skin I have every used.  My skin literally looks improved after each application.  I use this about three times a week to absorb excess oil and quickly eradicate blemishes.

100% Pure Super Fruits Night Balm: This luxurious balm is my nighttime treat.  It is rich and creamy and gives me the hydration I need without clogging my pores.

Image Solar Defense Universal Moisturizer SPF 30: The most effective way to preserve your skin and prevent damage is to protect it from the sun.  That’s why I use this lightweight daily moisturizer with SPF from Image Skincare.

You can read more details about the big day here!  Stop by my blog any time for skincare and beauty tips!  If you have any skincare questions I’d absolutely love to hear from you or come see me for a facial!  Here’s how to contact me.

4 things I always carry in my bag

Being a major product junkie, I’m constantly rotating cosmetics and grabbing new items to haphazardly throw put neatly in my purse.  There are, however, a few items that are constant staples for me.  Here are four things you can always find in my bag:

MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Creme Cup-This is my perfect pink shade for both day and night and for any season.  I also like a lipstick I can apply without having to look in the mirror and this shade is perfect for that.

Color Stick-I’m currently carrying Nars The Multiple in Orgasm, and I rotate that sometimes with Tarte Cheek Stain in True Love.  These sticks are great for a quick blush touch up throughout the day and can double as a lip color in a pinch.

Smith’s Rosebud Salve-My favorite balm that also works as a lip gloss, cuticle moisturizer and dry/itchy skin soother.

Hand Cream-My hands get so dry in this desert climate so I always keep a moisturizer in my purse.  My favorite line of hand cream is by Tokyo Milk.  Their creams are full of shea butter and come in a variety of unique, beautiful fragrances.  I’m currently rotating between the Dead Sexy and Honey & The Moon scents.

What are a few things you always carry?

The 7 Deadly Beauty Sins

This has been a popular tag on many of the beauty blogs I follow so I thought it would be fun to do my own!  Here are my 7 deadly beauty sins:

1. GREED: What is your most inexpensive beauty item? What is your most expensive?

My most inexpensive beauty item is my Avon GlazeWear Lip Gloss in Darling Pink. I bought it for $2.99 and it is one of my favorite glosses. My most expensive beauty item is my BabyBliss Pro flat iron. Lucky for me, it was a gift from Jon.

2. WRATH: What beauty products do you have a love/hate relationship with? What product has been the hardest to get?

I have a love/hate relationship with liquid eyeliner. I love the look it gives when applied correctly. I hate how tricky it can be to get the perfect, thin line. I use it every morning and I almost always have to fix my first attempt.

The product that was the hardest to get is my Jivago 24K Gold perfume. I asked for it as a birthday gift several years ago and my dad went to every department store in town looking for it with no luck. It was also sold out online in most places we looked. He finally found a website that sold it. It is such an amazing and expensive perfume that I only wear it for special occasions so it has lasted me quite a while. Now, it is much easier to find online so I won’t have the same ordeal when I need to replace it.

3. GLUTTONY: What are your most delicious beauty products?

My most delicious beauty products are:

100% Pure Honey Almond Body Cream: An ultra-rich body cream with a mouth-watering honey almond fragrance that smells like dessert.

Lush Rockstar Soap: My favorite body soap. It has a gorgeous pink color and a delicious spicy vanilla strawberry fragrance that lingers after you use it. YUM.

Trader Joe’s Honey Mango Moisturizing Shave Cream: This shaving cream smells good enough to eat. It has a rich, sweet mango scent and it leaves your legs super soft. It’s also really cheap. I think I got mine for $2.99.

4. SLOTH: What beauty product do you neglect, due to laziness?

I have been neglecting my Opalescence teeth whitening. I need to use it every few months and it is so simple to just pop in the trays before bed, yet it seems like too much work sometimes.
5. PRIDE: What beauty product gives you the most self confidence?

That is a tie between MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle and MAC Creme Cup lipstick. If I had to pick one to use it would probably be the Skinfinish. It leaves a luminescent glow on skin.

6. LUST: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?

A great smile, the ability to make me laugh…a lot, and smelling fresh and clean.

7. ENVY: What items would you most like to receive as a gift?

My favorite gift to receive is perfume. I get headaches easily, though, so it has to be a perfume I know I like and want. This perfume is currently at the top of my wish list.

What are some of your beauty sins?
