August Birchbox

20120820-163022.jpg

August’s Birchbox is a Beauty School theme since it’s back to school time!

What’s Inside

FusionBeauty LashFusion XL

-What it is: A mascara and lash conditioner in one that claims to give voluminous, healthy lashes.

-My thoughts: Ugh. I don’t like this mascara AT ALL. As I’ve mentioned before, I like to have dark, lush, thick lashes and this product does not do any of that for me. If you like extremely natural looking lashes this mascara may work for you but you can find better options for half the price at the drugstore.

Would I buy it: No

Full-size cost: $24

Shue Uemura Art of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo

-What it is: An oil-to-foam shampoo that cleanses without stripping hair of natural oils. For all hair types.

-My thoughts: My hair felt really soft after using and it smells so good. I was surprised at how clean my hair did feel after using this. The “oil” part of the product name made my wary. Even though my hair is dry, I like a good cleansing on my roots since I use a considerable amount of product and this did cleanse my hair well. For the price I wouldn’t purchase a full-sized bottle because I like what I’m currently using but this is a great product. If you have $55 to spend on shampoo this could be a great product for you.

Would I buy it: No

Full-size cost: $55

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream

-What it is: An all-purpose glycerin and camphor skin cream. Free of fragrance and dyes and gentle enough for infants. Perfect for treating chapped lips, cracked heels, dry spots on the face, etc. Cult product in Japan.

-My Thoughts: I really like this cream. It’s all-purpose use reminds me a bit of my beloved Rosebud Salve, although the texture is totally different. Yu-Be is thick and creamy and smells like menthol, but the scent goes away after applying. I put this on a few dry spots on my hands and it really soothed them.

Would I buy it: Yes

-Full-size cost: $16

Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur perfume sample

-What it is: A modern perfume with notes of waterlily, mandarin and wild berries.

-My thoughts: This perfume is too sweet and fruity for my taste.

Would I buy it: No

Full-size cost: $70

Schick Hydro Silk Razor

What it is: A shaving razor with a water-activated moisturizing serum and 5 “curve-sensing” blades.

My Thoughts: I really like this razor. I still used shaving cream with it but it left my legs really soft and it gives a close shave without making you feel like you’re going to slice yourself.

Would I buy it: Yes

Cost: $11.49

New Beauty Find! C.O. Bigelow Lavender Salve

20120702-161343.jpg

I’m part of a Bunco group. We meet monthly and play this mindless dice game while socializing, drinking sangria and eating delicious treats. Everyone walks away with a prize (some bigger than others). At our June Bunco game I won this C.O. Bigelow Lavender Salve. I have heard of the C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve before from Bath & Body Works and it competes with my beloved Rosebud Salve.  I was excited that I won this but not expecting to love it since I considered this brand a knock-off of the Rosebud line.

One swipe of this balm on my lips and I was in love!  It has an identical texture to the Rosebud Salves and the tin is the exact same shape and size.  It has a soothing, wonderful lavender aroma with no sweet flavor.  It leaves lips ultra hydrated and shiny, so it doubles as a gloss.  It’s completely clear on the lips, even though it’s a gorgeous purple shade in the tin.  Like the Rosebud balms this is a multi-purpose product that’s great for cuticles, dry spots, etc.  It’s only $5.50 at Bath & Body Works, although it seems that it’s only available in the store.  I don’t see the lavender salve on their website, but Amazon carries it.

Have you tried the C.O. Bigelow Salves?

4 things I always carry in my bag

Being a major product junkie, I’m constantly rotating cosmetics and grabbing new items to haphazardly throw put neatly in my purse.  There are, however, a few items that are constant staples for me.  Here are four things you can always find in my bag:

20120420-143240.jpg

MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Creme Cup-This is my perfect pink shade for both day and night and for any season.  I also like a lipstick I can apply without having to look in the mirror and this shade is perfect for that.

Color Stick-I’m currently carrying Nars The Multiple in Orgasm, and I rotate that sometimes with Tarte Cheek Stain in True Love.  These sticks are great for a quick blush touch up throughout the day and can double as a lip color in a pinch.

Smith’s Rosebud Salve-My favorite balm that also works as a lip gloss, cuticle moisturizer and dry/itchy skin soother.

Hand Cream-My hands get so dry in this desert climate so I always keep a moisturizer in my purse.  My favorite line of hand cream is by Tokyo Milk.  Their creams are full of shea butter and come in a variety of unique, beautiful fragrances.  I’m currently rotating between the Dead Sexy and Honey & The Moon scents.

What are a few things you always carry?

Rosebud Salves

My biggest beauty obsessions are lip products. Lipgloss, lipsticks and balms make me a very happy girl. I have quite an unnecessary collection of lip balms, or at least Jon thinks I do. I think I need them all. Because, well, because…I just need them!

Even though I run out and buy all the newest lip products as soon as they hit stores because I just have to try them and own them, I always come back to my beloved Rosebud Salves. Here are my thoughts on a few of these.

Smith’s Rosebud Salve

This is the original Rosebud Perfume Co. salve and is the most popular of the products. Celebrities and make-up artists rave about this multi-use salve. I love this one. It has a pretty rose color but goes on clear and shiny. It makes a fantastic lip gloss, a soothing balm and it’s also a great cuticle treatment. I put this on on my elbows and any other dry skin patches as well. The product claims to be great for diaper rash, burns and blemishes too. I just got a new one from Walgreens for only $3.99.

Smith’s Rosebud Strawberry Lip Balm & Moisturizer

This salve has a heavenly strawberry shortcake smell. I love that it smells like dessert but does not actually taste sweet when you are wearing it. I hate lip products that have a sweet flavor. Yuck. It’s a pretty pale pink shade in the tin and goes on clear. The texture is similar to the Rosebud Salve, very smooth. This also makes a great cuticle treatment and moisturizer for any dry skin patches.

Smith’s Minted Rose Lip Balm

This is my favorite of the ones I own. It has the same addictive texture as the Rosebud Salve with the light zing of peppermint. The deep rose color is gorgeous in the tin. It has a bit more color than the others but is still mostly clear on the lips. I use this one only as a lip balm.

Have you tried the Rosebud salves? What are your favorite lip balms you keep coming back to?
